Frog in a Bird Bath

By AC Button II

Frog in a Bird Bath was commissioned via Open Doors 2023 as a feature for an elementary school wildlife garden.  Before production,  the concept was developed in conjunction with students enrolled in a Summer Enrichment Program.

Sculpted in donated GA Blue Granite, the finished bird bath incorporates the year date, the school mascot paw print and an outline depicting the State of South Carolina.  The focal point is a frog resting in one basin of the paw print with his eyes and nose just above the water’s surface.  A roughened final surface is present to encourage plant growth for assimilation into the natural environment.

The project was carved direct, with frog referenced from a plastilina sketch by Button.  All carving was done with pneumatic hand machines and chisels.
